Athens Restaurants

The major sources of entertainment in Greece are the cafes, clubs and bars that line many of the major streets. Most of the locals hang out at these cafes after work. These are major watering holes and during the weekends the cafes rarely close for the day. Tourists can sit along with the locals sipping a drink of Ouzo or sampling Greek appetizers while gazing at the deep blue Mediterranean or taking pictures of the Acropolis at sunset. Half-day tours, all day tours, Evening tours and multi-day tours are available which includes authentic seafood, Greek Folk Dances with Bouzouki music.

Eating is a national pastime for Greeks all over the world. Whether they are eating at a fancy restaurant or at their neighborhood taverna, they really enjoy their food with ouzo, wine or any other drink over an extensive spread of grilled seafood, steak and other delicacies including mouth-watering desserts like Trigona panoramatos, Galaktobureko, Bougatsa pies, Manouri me Frouta, Kok, Kalitsounia kritis and Pougkia Glyka me Karythi.

The small port called Microlimano provides a plethora of seafood restaurants where the food is very expensive but worth the price as the catch of the day is really what it means. Fresh off the sea! Here, you can sit by the water, watch the docked boats, the fish drying in the sun and a whole lot of natural entertainment while enjoying the best seafood in the world! Taverna Botsaris is a reasonable place to visit along with another establishment called Capt John's, Vaggelis and Irini's.

From Syntagma metro station, you can also go to a restaurant called EDEM (there is a metro station by the same name) and get fresh seafood including octopus and strange sea creatures you may have never seen before.

In a place called Nea Psyhico, there is a small ouzeri called Xoxlidaki where you can get uncommon stuff like Cretan dakos salad, sadziki, fava, grilled sardines, kokoretsi, etc.

In the street called Fokionos Negri there are many restaurants with a vast variety of grilled meats, seafood and vegetables. Faidra, Bioletta, Mezedomaxies, To Tsiporadiko and Spagettria are some of the better restaurants. You may find choices like grilled octopus, stuffed cabbage, fried barbounia, boiled beets, grilled steaks, wine, beer, ouzo and tsipuro.

Gazi is another area on the metro line (#3) where you can find restaurants such as The Butcher shop, Sardeles, Gazochori, etc. Here you will find authentic grilled meats, lamb chops, eggs, chicken, wild boar sausages, fried koutsomoures, whole fried shrimp, grilled cuttlefish, and of course a variety of local drinks and wines.

In Psiri, one can find the Taverna Tou Psiri which is the oldest in that area. Here you can find the best of Greece including their keftedes, paidakia, kolokithea keftedes, sadziki, etc. Another restaurant in Psiri is the Telis which specializes in grilled pork chops (hirino brizoles) along with fried potatoes and salads. There are also a few Indian restaurants in this area as well as Indian, Chinese and Arabic shops.

Brettos

Situated in the heart of Plaka area of Athens is the oldest distillery which has been creating its own brewery concoctions for over a hundred years. This is the bar, as they say in Athens, where they know your name even if they can't pronounce it right! This place is said to have exotic liquors such as apricot, coconut, curacao, etc. which are available for sampling. An evening here with the local crowd is memorable indeed.
